The public pianos are back! Since 24 June, publicly accessible pianos have been set up in Düsseldorf city centre, inviting people to play. In collaboration with Rheinbahn, the asphalt Festival has installed two pianos at Heinrich-Heine-Allee and Oberbilker Markt underground stations to mark the start of the ‘Summer Festival of the Arts’. The public pianos will be available for residents to play until the end of the festival. Amidst the hustle and bustle of the underground stations, they provide a chance to pause, take a seat at the keys, or simply enjoy the music of others.

This initiative was first launched in 2017 and was so well received that passers-by played music in the underground stations almost around the clock. Time and again, musicians and singers would meet up at the pianos for jam sessions and impromptu performances. Experience has shown that the city pianos also generate significant interest on social media, with numerous photos and videos being posted under the hashtag #stadtklaviere.
