‘The perfect music for a lonely night in the big city.’

The five virtuoso and improvising musicians of Tango del Sur interpret modern tango with passion and precision. The quintet’s setlist includes both well-known and much too rarely performed treasures of recent tango literature: wistful, languorous melodies by Osvaldo Pugliese, Horacio Salgán, Lalo Schifrin, Pablo Ziegler and – of course – Astor Piazzolla. Tango del Sur sound urban, feverish, austere and playful at the same time and always suggest that contemporary tango is rooted in classical music and jazz. The quintet’s concerts create an unmistakable atmosphere that is hard to resist – intense and emotional, melancholic and powerful.
Tango del Sur are Heinz Hox (accordion), Naomi Binder (violin), Ludger Ferreiro (piano), Thomas Falke (double bass) and Bojan Vuletić (guitar) – five professional soloists who have also made a name for themselves in other musical contexts.
Heinz Hox has played as a soloist and in ensembles on international tours and concerts as well as on many albums by well-known artists and has developed his very own sound on the accordion. As a studio musician, he excels in many styles, from folk music to film music and free jazz. But his favourite genres are jazz and tango.
After studying at the Vienna Academy of Music, Naomi Binder gained experience in renowned German orchestras and deepened her knowledge of chamber music with her Prisma Quartet under Professor Walter Levin in Basel. Her experience working with international artists from a wide range of genres and her sensitivity for musical interplay make her a versatile and sought-after violinist.
Pianist Ludger Ferreiro can look back on numerous classical and jazz concerts in Germany, Norway, Spain, Austria and the Netherlands. One focus of his work is Spanish flamenco. He has worked intensively with the dancer Blanca Nieves, the guitarist Rayko Schlee and the singer Enrique Correas. His other focus is on Argentinean tango – traditional with the Berlin quartet Nochero and improvised and modern with Tango del Sur.
Thomas Falke has been working as a freelance double bass player for over twenty years. His musical spectrum ranges from early music to classical music (as a permanent member of the Cologne Chamber Orchestra and the New Rhenish Chamber Orchestra) and ensembles (including the Köster Hocker Band, Jazzmagazin and Neuzeit). His interest in historical performance practice and old instruments regularly leads to guest engagements for the New Orchestra and the Cologne Academy.
Guitarist and composer Bojan Vuletić has already worked with many international soloists as well as with major orchestras such as the WDR Big Band, the Metropolitan Cathedral Choir Liverpool, the Duisburg Philharmonic and the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra. In addition to his artistic activities, he is the founder and director of the asphalt Festival alongside director Christof Seeger-Zurmühlen.

That’s what the others say:
‘This is simply how contemporary tango should sound as the urban music of our time’
